I AM who I AM [Part 2]

I AM who I AM- The Bread of Life.

1/ The Bread if life.

Text John 6: 35  And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

Jesus said “I AM” … The Bread if life. When Jesus uses His name “I AM” (From lesson 1) it means a lot more than what it would mean if I said “I am a builder.” Or you said…use your name and occupation here. This point that I AM The Bread of life takes on a whole new meaning because of the Name of God, “I AM who I AM”, I AM The Lord, from Ex 3:14-15. And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” This is My name forever, and this is My memorial to all generations.’ So when Jesus uses it He means He always was the bread of life and He always will be the bread of life and He could be to you the bread of life today. His name I AM brings out the timelessness of the person of Jesus; before he was born to Mary He was the great I AM for Moses; I AM The Lord. To us of this age He is I AM the Lord Jesus Christ who takes away the sin of the world; all authority has been given unto Me in Heaven and on Earth, yes Jesus is our great I AM. Today we shall study Jesus Christ I AM … The Bread of Life.

Firstly two things before we begin, Jesus did not come to preach the gospel, no He actually is the gospel; Jesus is the good news for men today as He has been for 2000 yrs now and we would do well if we should know Him personally. Secondly Jesus didn’t claim to be just any bread He claimed to be The Bread; the bread is the only bread, there is no one like Jesus and we would do well to keep that in mind as there are many distractions in the world. So we should Know Jesus personally because He is the good news and we should watch out for fakes who would distract us from the truth of Jesus. There is no one else like Jesus.

John Ch 6 is all about the bread; it starts off with the feeding of the 5000. If you don’t know this miracle Jesus did I will explain like this; Jesus walked the shores of Galilee where He spoke in many parables that few could understand but the people sat for hours just to listen to that man; some say he was a politician that he spoke of being free; He was followed by the masses on the shores of Galilee. The feeding of the 5000 happened at Tiberius on the west side of the lake, it’s still there today. Look at Google maps. The people had seen the miracles Jesus did and followed Him because of the signs (2) not because they believed in Him. They hadn’t yet made up their mind just who Jesus was at this point; they knew Moses had spoken of someone like this who would come one day but they weren’t sure it was Jesus. So when Jesus saw the multitude even though they followed Him for the wrong reason he had compassion on them and turned to Philip (6,7)  testing him He asked where can we buy bread to feed all these people? Philips answer reveals that Jesus is sufficient; Yesu Pordime in Tamil; Jesus is sufficient for me and He is sufficient for you today. Two hundred denari worth of bread is not sufficient Phillip said, that everyone may have just a little. My namesake Philip passed the test, he was right, no amount of money is sufficient to bring satisfaction in life for you; but Jesus brings real satisfaction; I AM the Bread of life that satisfies the hungry soul. Is your soul hungry today? O taste and see (Psa 34:8) that The Lord is good and you will never hunger again. Andrew brought a boy to Jesus who, had brought his own lunch, 5 loves and two fish and was willing to share. “But what are they among so many,” Andrew commented? It turns out that the gift the boy was willing to share was sufficient when brought to Jesus. Jesus blessed the food and then started breaking it up and distributing it and it never ran out until the people were filled (12), satisfied. This is a great illustration of what Jesus the bread of life can do for the hungry soul even today and the gift the boy brought was sufficient when brought to Jesus.

The plight of the poor around the world is such a big problem; even a rich man would not even scratch the surface of the problem if used all his money. The message of Jesus however is different; I AM the bread of life, he who comes to me will never hunger, he who believes in Me will never thirst. Like the people who came to Jesus for the wrong reason, maybe you are here today for the wrong reason; they all went away satisfied and you can go away satisfied if you believe in Jesus today. The people were not expecting to be fed but they were hungry; you may get an unexpected surprise if you come to Jesus today. Or maybe you are like the boy who came to Jesus, someone small who is willing to share, Jesus satisfies the whole crowd with your small gift, the gift of your soul. Maybe you are an Andrew who brought the boy to Jesus; he went out and found the boy and brought Him to Jesus. He did something important, you could do something like this with your friends and family, bring them to Jesus and they will never hunger, believe in Him and you shall never thirst. I AM Philip when I say it has great meaning because like Philip here I have no money to bring and all the money would never satisfy the problems I see but I believe in Jesus who is sufficient, Jesus satisfies the hungry soul. I may not have money but I have Jesus to share with you and He is sufficient for all of us together if we come to Him we will never hunger and if we believe in Him we will never thirst. We shall be satisfied. Many people are dissatisfied with what this world has to offer; with Jesus in His world we can be satisfied.

But let us press on with the next part; Jesus walks upon the water 15-21). What would you think if you were out on the lake at night in a storm and you see Jesus walking on the water; would you think he was a ghost come to take your life? Fear would take hold of you as watched him approach, unable to do anything you clutch your ore and wait in the dark. When He is close enough to hear, but you still can’t see His face, the familiar voice of your friend echoes over the noise of the storm across the water. “Do not fear it is I.” (20) What relief you would feel as you welcome Him into your boat as the disciples did on this night. “Do not fear, It is I,” was what Jesus called out to His friends in the storm on the lake in the dark of the night; they were worn out from struggling against the waves and frightened by the approaching Jesus. This life is dark and the storms of life are fierce and tonight Jesus is walking towards your boat as you struggle to row against the waves; you are frightened because you don’t know who Jesus is. Jesus walks upon the water in the storm of your life in the darkness of sin where no one else can go to save you, will you welcome Jesus into your boat or will you let him pass on by. You know the disiples rowed 4 miles in the storm and wore themselves out, they never reached their destination under their own steam. But when they welcomed Jesus into their boat they were immediately at their destination. The storm had stopped it’s raging and they were safe in the harbour of Capernium. When you welcome Jesus into your boat, into your life, into your heart, into your family or into your village, immediately you have reached your destination. Jesus makes a difference immediately in the storm of your life because He is your destiny and he has sent me to look for you tonight. The disciples who were actually experienced fishermen could not make their destination without Jesus in their boat and then immediately they were on the other side of the lake safe. If you are on the wrong side of the lake struggling and tonight you see Jesus walking toward you listen for His call, do you hear it? “Do not fear, it is I”, I AM the bread of life trust Me, allow me into your boat and immediately you will be on the other side, safe. You want to be on the right side when Jesus returns one day so even if you are experienced like the sailors in the boat be wise tonight and invite Jesus into your boat; get on the right side, He is calling you.

So after the feeding Jesus realised that the people were about to take Him by force and make Him king (15) but instead of lapping up the praise and adoration Jesus withdraws to the mountain alone, while his disciples rowed across the lake. Jesus refused to be made king, He refused the honour of men because he already knew who He was; I AM who I AM… the true bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world. After the crowd had gone home and unknown to them, He walks on the water through the storm to the disciples struggling in the boat and they were immediately on the other side in safe harbour in Capernaum. When the people awoke the next day they couldn’t find Jesus, there were no other boats for Him and they knew he didn’t go with His disciples so they went looking for Him. They got other boats and went to Capernaum and found Him there. “When did you come here?” they asked, secretly angry that He had escaped them. They could see that a man who could make five loaves feed five thousand men would be a good meal ticket for them so they wanted to keep Him all to themselves.

Jesus knew this so He pointed out that they were seeking Him for the wrong reason. He gave them the right way(27) Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.” Jesus calls Himself Son of Man because He loves mankind and He has a gift for us all; it is the food which endures to everlasting life. We labour and train for jobs in this world so we can have nice things and feed ourselves but these things pass away. How much time do we spend labouring for the food which does not perish but brings eternal life to the partaker? When they realised that Jesus had found them out they pretended to ask what shall we do? Jesus said, the work you must do to have the bread of life is to Believe in Me. Believe in Jesus today and the same bread is available to you; the food which endures to everlasting life that the Son of Man will give you. You may be seeking Jesus for the wrong reasons like the crowd that came over the lake to find their meal ticket but the Son of man loves you anyway and if you ask the question, “What shall I do?” He answers softly to you Believe in Me and I will give you LIFE.

What more could you want everlasting life and a satisfied soul; contentment and hope for the future for that is what the Son of Man offers his fellow men who follow Him even today. Come to Jesus and seek Him and you will find great satisfaction in your life; (Ps 34:18) The Lord is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit. And He will be near to you if you seek Him.

Still having the wrong motives the people wanted another miracle from Jesus; they were still hungry; Jesus says, (32) My Father gives you the true bread from heaven; 33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Jesus came down from Heaven and became a man so that He could give life to each one of us, He loves us that much. Here Jesus is revealing His true identity he is the bread of God given by God to feed the souls of the world. Give us this bread always they cried out in their hunger, expecting that Jesus would feed them again as He did the day before. Jesus had something else in mind, not the feeding of the body but the feeding of the soul when He revealed, I AM the bread of life (35) he used his other name I AM… the bread of life. Up until now He had called Himself the Son of man but that was not His real name it was his the name He used to show he is with man He is one of us. He knows what it is like to be a baby, a child, a teenager and then a man. So we have got no excuse with Jesus because the son of man knows us and He loves us; but now Jesus is revealing His true identity in His Name I AM the bread of life, I AM from Heaven, I AM not the son of man but the Son of God Himself. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. Do you believe this? Many on that day even though they saw him did not believe (36) but Jesus wants you to know for sure that the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out (37). Jesus will not cast you out if you come to Him today because He came down not to do His own will but to do the will of His Father who sent Him. The will of the Father is (40) that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.” On the last day of your life or on the last day of this world whichever comes first you want to be on the right side, on Jesus’ side not fighting against Him; it is God’s will that you have eternal life but you must be on the right side at the last day so He can raise you up. Are you kicking against the goads of God, fighting against Jesus, making excuses not to believe in Him; it is hard to kick against the goads. Hear His friendly voice over the waves of the storm in your life and realise today your soul is hungry and Jesus is the bread of life which came down from Heaven to feed the souls of men.

The people were offended by this; even though Jesus had done nothing wrong. He had fed them, He had healed their sick, even raised some of their dead, He had cast out demons from the possessed; He had compassion on the multitudes of poor and shown them the good news but they were offended because He said He came down from Heaven. Well Jesus is about to offend them even more because they did not believe. Rather than plead with them to come to Him and believe He says, (44) No one can come to Me. No one can come to Me… unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. So You cannot come to Jesus unless you hear the still small voice calling you across to the other side through the storm of life. If you invite Him into your boat then you immediately will have reached your destination; but you can’t come unless you feel the draw of the tide of the Holy Spirit on your heart, unless you hear the call deep in your soul; unless you feel the pangs of hunger from your dehydrated spirit. I ask you do you feel that draw today; do you hear his voice in your soul, if not then pray that you won’t be left behind because of unbelief like these people. Jesus assures us (47) Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me[g] has everlasting life. 48 I AM the bread of life… If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever.

After saying this He offends them even more because they complained. How can He give His flesh to be eaten? They asked, not realising that the things He spoke were spiritual. Jesus rubs it in (54) Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day. 55 For My flesh is food indeed,[h] and My blood is drink indeed. This offended them even more, the thought of eating flesh and drinking blood but Jesus was searching for a glimmer of faith in the people so he pressed the matter as He taught in their synagogue. (58) This is the bread which came down from heaven—not as your fathers ate the manna, and are dead. He who eats this bread will live forever.” It appears that he offended many of His disciples (60) when they heard this, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can understand it?”

Can you understand it? Have I offended you today by repeating the words of Jesus. It is provocative language I know but it is the word which Jesus spoke when He wanted to break through the hard hearts of the people.

So today let us see what His closest disciples answer when Jesus asked them the question I am asking you today; (61) “Does this offend you? “Does this offend you? If this offends you then what if you saw something really spiritual like the son of man ascending into Heaven and what He said when He did. “All authority is given unto Me, in Heaven and on Earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all nations.” If my words offend you do not worry, Jesus said these things not to offend to make you think; to break into your hard heart with His message, “I AM, I always have been, I always will be and if you come to Me, I will be your bread of life.”

Jesus put them out of their misery when He said (63) The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life. 64 But there are some of you who do not believe.” “Therefore I have said to you that no one can come to Me unless it has been granted to him by My Father.” It is a great privilege to be offered the opportunity by God to come to Jesus and receive eternal life; but some of you do not believe and will not take Him up on His offer. It is not Gods will, that he should lose any of you; but that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have eternal life and He will raise you up on the last day (39-40). Everyone may come it is the Fathers will that everyone may come to Jesus the bread of life and never hunger and believe in Him so never thirst. Everyone, it is not an exclusive club for just a few that the Father calls; The Bread of Life is for everyone, even you. He says may come because God says it is OK for you to come, and if you come He will not cast you out but the choice is yours; you may come but the choice is yours.

His closest disciples were asked, (67) “Do you also want to go away?” Have I offended you also? To which Peter answered, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. 69 Also we have come to believe and know that You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” To whom shall you go if you turn away from Jesus today; only He has the words of eternal life. Even if I have nothing else in this life; if I have the words of eternal life in my heart I am the richest man on earth; if I have a friend like Jesus I have all I need for I have come to believe and know that He is the Christ the Son of God and I believe Him when He says, I AM the bread of life. I always have been, I always will be and if you come to Me I will, be your bread of life today.

Amen.
